The Library of Congress is a renowned library home its abundant collections in three buildings – James Madison Memorial Building, John Adams Building, and Thomas Jefferson Building. It’s one of the oldest federal institutions as well as the US Congress’s research library. Due to countless manuscripts, maps, books, photos, and recordings, this is the world’s largest library collection and is a priceless resource of history. The library operations are managed by the administrative section.
Established in the Capitol Building at the year 1800, the library eased research work conducted by Congress. President John Adams declared the building and the initial collections, value $5000, consisted of law books sourced from England.
The participation of Jefferson was valuable during the years wherein he effectively regulated the surgeries and put in many important processes in place. The early collection was destroyed in the year 1814 when the Capitol Building was invaded and the British soldiers set it on fire.
Thomas Jefferson donated his personal collection of books he had gathered over a period of 50 years on different topics like literature, science, and philosophy. This collection included a number of foreign language books. He had been paid over $20,000 to get a collection of over 6,450 books.
This was quite a tumultuous period as Charles desired the Smithsonian Institution to be the official library of the US, whereas Joseph wanted to promote the Library of Congress as the national library of the nation harvard houghton library. Joseph was successful in ignoring Charles and transferred the precious collection of over 40,000 volumes from Smithsonian Institution to the Library of Congress.
In the year 1864, Ainsworth Rand Spofford took over as the librarian and considered in the philosophy of Jefferson which coped with the universality notion and took attempts to bring in various collections of books from all topics.
Afterwards, Spofford made it compulsory for those applicants of the US copyrights to deliver two copies of their work to the library. Shortly, there was space as the library was totally flooded with channels, prints, music, books, and photos along with other wealthy collections due to which a new building was constructed in Italian Renaissance design and came to be known as the Thomas Jefferson Building.
